BCRR Weekly Update 2/27/23 - 3/5/23

Greetings Bayou City Road Runners

The Word from the Bird

If Not You, Who? If Not Now, When?

The club cannot survive without volunteers! How about YOU?! It's great fun, and it's a great way to make new friends!

Current highest need for volunteers:

  • Bayou City Classic 10K (March 4) - See below
  • Poppy's Run For Life 5K (March 26)
  • BCRR President (2023-2024 season)
  • BCRR Treasurer (2023-2024 season)

For details regarding these volunteer opportunities see below, or visit the BCRR Volunteers Page.

Mark Your Calendar!

BCRR Spring Family Picnic
Sunday, March 12, (Noon – approx. 4 PM) at the home of new parents Andrew and Christina, 4010 Mandell St.

Our BCRR Board will be manning the grill with burgers and hotdogs. Feel free to bring a side, dessert, or beverage of your choice! We will have Wiffle Ball and Frisbee. Please bring your favorite yard games!

Darling Dash Done!

The Darling Dash, held yesterday at Stude Park, went off yesterday without a hitch. That is thanks in large part to BCRR's Mike Mangan and nearly a dozen volunteers (like Susan Cita pictured smiling above) that have been there year-after-year supporting the cause. Despite the threatening skies, it never rained on the runners, and the 13th year of the Darling Dash saw nothing but good fun. HARRA Spring Series Reminder

The Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA) organizes two major racing series, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. Both series offer contests for individuals as well as interclub competitions - and each race series features significant prizes for the winners! We are currently in the middle of the HARRA SPRING SERIES 2023:

  • Jan 15 - Aramco Houston Half Marathon - GRB Convention Center
  • Feb 18 - HBA Fun Run 8K - Sam Houston Park
  • March 4 - Bayou City Classic 10K - Houston City Hall
  • April 1 - Bellaire Trolley Run 5k  - Bellaire
  • May 13 - LP Run (33 1/3 min)  - Rice University track
  • May - Bayou Bash Relay T.C. Jester Park

For more details checkout the HARRA race series link.

Speaking of HARRA Spring Series, up next is the The Bayou City Classic 10K! The Bayou City Classic 10K has been a Houston tradition for more than 45 years and holds the record as the oldest 10K in Texas. The event attracts more than 3000 runners, walkers, and volunteers. This club favorite always sees dozens of BCRR members in attendance due in no small part to BCRR's own Joe Sellers serving as Race Director and Susan Cita being the Volunteer Coordinator. They invite YOU to join the race or lend a hand! Learn more at BayouCityClassic.

Sundays Need Hydration Support

Who likes water during the Sunday long runs? Especially in the summer! Our Sunday morning hydration team could use a little more help as people go on vacation. Please contact Loris at Loris0105@yahoo.com for more information on how to volunteer!

Friendly COVID Reminder

As the number of cases fluctuates, the BCRR Board kindly requests that you receive the COVID vaccination to minimize the risk to yourself and others. Wearing a mask is still encouraged. Please maintain social distancing prior to and following club runs. Additionally, if you are feeling ill, have a fever, or have been exposed to an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19, please do not attend club runs for 2 weeks.
