BCRR Weekly Update 7/3/23 - 7/9/23

Greetings Bayou City Road Runners

The Word from the Bird

Don't melt in the heat! In Houston's heat, even experienced runners should always have a hydration plan.

Save the Date: July 26 Dash & Splash

Feeling hotter than a popsicle on the Fourth of July? BCRR's past presidents have an answer! Christina and Andrew Young are hosting a Dash & Splash Party at their place right after the Wednesday, July 26, run. Details are to be announced, but in short, right after the evening's run, head over to the Young house for food, friends, and fun in the pool!

Until then, plan your runs with due consideration of the Houston heatwave. If you ran yesterday during the sauna-like conditions, then you know hydration breaks make all the difference in the world. (Shout out to Loris Fusi and her hydration volunteers!)

Party in the Park is scheduled for Saturday, Aug 19.

Call for Volunteers: Party in the Park

Saturday, Aug 19, BCRR joins HARRA for the annual Party in the Park where all clubs get together to celebrate running and invite nonmembers to join up. The fun includes beer, watermelon, music, lots of running clubs, and more!

Volunteers are invited to support this summertime soirée by helping BCRR and HARRA host tents. Sign up by emailing HoustonBCRR@gmail.com.

The event officially runs 7 AM - 10 AM at Memorial Park's running trail near the tennis courts. Best of all, it's FREE, but the club needs volunteers to make it happen. Save the date, Aug 19, and raise your hand to join our hosting team!

Summer days in Stavanger, Norway, only rise to about 65 degrees. Just sayin.

Summer Getaway: Stavanger, Norway

Lisa, Avi, and Loris, will run away from Houston's stifling summer heat to try the half marathon in Stavanger, Norway, August 26. Interested members are welcome to join them in a BCRR Summer Getaway! Learn more at https://stavangermarathon.no/en/

Club members wearing the BCRR shirts during HARRA races earned free BCRR membership this year.

BCRR Membership Renewal Season

If you qualified for a free BCRR membership this year, by running in a designated HARRA race last season while wearing a BCRR team shirt, then your membership is FREE. The club will send you a confirmation email if BCRR records show you qualified. If you do not receive the confirmation email, but you qualified for a free membership, please email HoustonBCRR@gmail.com.

July is the month when the club's calendar year flips over, and all members (not automatically renewed) are encouraged to renew their membership before month's end. BCRR is thankful for the 2022-2023 season members, and looks forward to seeing everyone return for the 2023-2024 season. Select this LINK TO RENEW your membership now.

Female Runners Research Request

In support of scientific discovery, BCRR is sharing this call for research volunteers.

The qualified research volunteer will be compensated with a $370 gift card to Target. Qualifications include female athletes 18 - 40 years old with regular, monthly cycles, who are not on birth control. For more info email ewillingham@twu.edu, or phone 281-757-6290.

Sundays Need Hydration Support

Who likes water during the Sunday long runs? Especially during the summer temps! Our Sunday morning hydration team could use a little more help as people go on vacation. Please contact Loris at Loris0105@yahoo.com for more information on how to volunteer!

As the number of cases fluctuates, the BCRR Board kindly requests that you receive the COVID vaccination to minimize the risk to yourself and others. Wearing a mask is still encouraged. Please maintain social distancing prior to and following club runs.
