Congratulations to all who ran or volunteered for the Bayou City Classic 10K race on Saturday. Many BCRR members picked up awards including our centipede team which won for the award for the largest centipede.   (FOUND: A black Alfani, size med., light jacket left at BCRR tent - contact kmahon@bcm.edu; LOST: Scott's chacos by the reflecting pond)

MEMORIAL PARK WARNING: There has been a significant rise in car break-ins at Memorial Park during daylight hours. Thieves are watching you leave your car for a run/walk - then they break in to your cars. HPD has been more visible since the break-ins and since the BB gun shooting incident, but please do no leave valuables in sight and remember to lock your cars.

Anyone who plans to run the All State Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic 10K Race in New Orleans on Saturday, March 30 is invited to Cocktails in the Courtyard at Chuck and Cheryl's from 5:30pm until 7:30pm in the French Quarter. This race is described as the original "party race" and attracts over 20,000 runners, walkers and partiers each year. They also have a 4-mile bridge run and a unique 2-mile run through the Christmas light show in City Park. SAVE THE DATE: May 18, 2013......BEACH TO BAY in Corpus Christi. It's time to start organizing your relay team. 

Since 1976, runners and fun-seekers have flocked to Corpus Christi, Texas to run the Beach to Bay Relay Marathon. To many runners, the annual event has become a tradition throughout the State of Texas. 

Beach to Bay has grown to be the largest relay marathon in the United States. Attracting runners from all over the U.S. as well as Kenya, England and Mexico. Approximately 2,600 teams totaling over 16,000 runners compete each year.

The Beach to Bay Relay Marathon is a six-person relay running event that totals 26.2 miles of beach, pavement, a little sweat, an occasional tear and a bunch of smiles. Beginning on the sands of North Padre Island, winding through Naval Air Station Corpus Christi and ending at McCaughan Park along Corpus Christi’s scenic Shoreline Drive, the course is divided into six-legs of roughly 4.4 miles each. Always held on the third Saturday in May, Armed Forces Day, B2B proudly honors the men and women serving in our United States Military. (http://www.beachtobayrelay.com)

Happy Hour (March 15, 2013, 6:30PM): Join us for happy hour at CRISP, located at 2220 Bevis Street in the Heights. 

Running Calendar:

Saturday April 13th: Cancer Run being held at the Tom Bass Regional Park. This year’s event will feature a chip timed 13.6K and 6.8K, a 1 Mile Fun Run as well as a free Little Kids Dash. Come and test your skills and dedication while serving a great cause!

This race is being held by PA students at the Baylor College of Medicine who are helping their classmate and his organization set up as well as host their first run here in Houston. The Susan M Turley Foundation has had 4 successful runs in Arizona.

To provide some reprieve for young adult cancer patients, the Susan M. Turley Foundation sponsors One Weekend Away - a no-cost, restful and relaxing weekend in a setting where these young victims can escape their all-consuming pressures and enjoy a peaceful surrounding. By providing this service, the quality of life for these individuals and their loved ones will be strengthened and enhanced. "We can’t cure their disease, but we can provide relief and support during their battle." The Susan M. Turley Foundation is a non-profit 501c(3) charity.

  • LP Run (April 17, 2013) Rice University Track The fifth HARRA race of the Spring Series!
    The LP Run is a race in which everyone runs as far they can for 33 1/3 minutes (33:20) (it is named after the rpm speed on the old LP phonographs). It is the successor to the One Hour Run which began in the late 1960s. Hence it is the oldest footrace in Houston and one of the oldest continually run footraces in the United States.

    The race is run in three heats: 6:30 p.m. for open men and Clydesdales (195lbs+); 7:15 p.m. for all women; and 8:00 p.m. for masters men (over 40 years of age).

    This year Terlingua Track Club is again hosting the race at Rice University Track and Soccer Stadium on a Wednesday evening, April 17. There will be water and energy drink on the track and music continuously playing to make the run that much more fun.

    After the race there will be a lot of refreshments and food for everyone. The awards are plentiful and the camaraderie is unexcelled.  More details can be found at www.terlingutrackclub.org.

  • Bayou Bash (April 27, 2013) Rice Stadium.  The sixth HARRA race of the Spring Series!

  • April 16th, 6 PM, White Oak at Thelma

  • April 30th, 6 PM, Rugby field

Wednesday (Rice University): Join us every Wednesday evening at Rice University for Sprints and Spirits. The group meets at the First Christian Church/School parking lot off Rice Blvd. (1628 Rice Blvd.) at 5:45 pm (run leaves at 6 pm). The Bayou Run (6.6 miles) is the usual route but there are shortcuts and alternative routes as well. All levels are welcome. And the best part is the cheap beer at Valhalla, a delightfully casual and economical watering hole, afterwards. Come on out! It's a great way to break up the stressful work week.

Friday Hills at Mount Bacon (Tanglewood): Join us for this weekly run from St. Martins Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road to Mount Bacon. We meet in the church parking lot at the corner of Sage Road and Woodway Drive at 5:30 am. We have a 1.3 mile warm-up run to Mount Bacon and do 2 to 4 miles of hills with a 1.3 mile run back to the church.

Sunday Long Run (Memorial Park, 6:30AM): Join us for the weekly long run from Memorial Park zero-mile marker. We leave promptly at 6:30 and members typically run between 10 and 15 miles. Breakfast afterwards at Java Java911 W 11th St in the Heights.
