BCRR This Week, June 10 through 17, 2013

HELLO BAYOU CITY!

In honor of National Running Day this weeks Valhalla tab was sponsored by BCRR. We had lots of potential BCRR members who regularly run at Rice stop by our hydration station and express interest in our club. Thanks to all who stopped by and helped out especially Susan Cita and Joe Lengfellner.

BCRR..... "where the women are strong and the men are good looking"..... well maybe just half right. BCRR really took home the hardware at the HARRA Banquet on Sunday night and our women especially dominated.

In the Club Competition we won the Overall Club Award, Masters Female, Veteran Male and Veteran Female. In Team Competition we won the Overall Team Award, Masters Female and Veteran Female.

In the Runner of The Season Competition Shelly Grahmann finished third place Open, Anna Helm finished third place Masters Women, Jody Berry finished second place Veteran Female and Ed Fry finished second place Veteran Male.

In the Service Awards we really had lots of members pick up gift cards. We had four members finish in the Top 10 Volunteer Group picking up $100 gift cards: Peter Birckhead, Joe Carey, Ron Morgan and Terry Fanning. Also honored were: Joe Sellers, Hope Sellers, John Phillips, Eddie Rodriguez, Michelle Wolpert, Joe Lengfellner, Jonathan Zwickel and Rich Siemens.

Guest Speaker Brant Kotch, President and Race Director of the Houston Marathon gave out a few hints about the new Marathon Course but could not reveal the actual course because the new course will be unveiled tomorrow (Tuesday) during a press conference by Houston Mayor Annise Parker. Be sure to tune in the your favorite local news channel because some big changes are being made to the course this year. He did say it will be even flatter and wider this year.

Now is the time of year to renew your BCRR dues. Eddie Rodriguez is still in at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin recovering from an automobile accident. BCRR and the Houston running community have really reached out to Eddie and his family during this difficult time and many have made the trip to Austin to visit him. Lisa Foronda has been raising money to help with Eddie's medical expenses and to cover travel expenses for his mother and brother in Austin while he recovers. So far she has raised almost $14,000. You can send a PayPal donation to https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/send-money-online and use the recipient email ofedrod.fund@gmail.com.

Tina Reynolds and Andrew Kenworthy will be hosting a Mid-Summer's night party at their house on Friday the 21st of June 2013, 8:00 pm until after the summer solstice. Since it is mid-summer the pool will be warm and the hot tub on, so bring your gear if you wish to swim.
For those of you who like to dress up (and I know a few of you do) midsummer night should give you a theme to work with. Themes costumes are encouraged but not compulsory.
Address:
2138 Wroxton Road, 77005, Houston.
In order to get approximate numbers please RSVP to Tina Reynolds at

Big thanks to Alonso and Anna Vargas for hosting Pablo & Maria Rivero 's Baby Shower at their home on Sunday. For those who did not attend you missed a fun party. Team Alonso and Pablo swept the field in the spirited rubber ducky pong contest. Jonathan Zwickel, Avi Moss, Tom Wille and Jeff Tabourne displayed lots of talent hurling the rubber duckies, if only they had better partners. Lisa Thompson showed she is a more talented rubber ducky tosser than bowler. Although not an official event almost everyone thought Rick Goldberg's Daffy Duck was a winner in the Onesie Decorating Contest. Peter Griffiths landscape design had to be a close second. Miguel Rivero will probably be the best dressed baby boy in Fayetteville Arkansas and fortunately for him it looks like he will be a native Texan since he should be arriving before they move in mid July. Although not in the club very long, Pablo picked up awards in almost every race he participated in. They all will really be missed.

Weekly Club Runs:
Wednesday (Rice University): Join us every Wednesday evening at Rice University for Sprints and Spirits. The group meets at the First Christian Church/School parking lot off Rice Blvd. (1628 Rice Blvd.) at 5:45 pm (run leaves at 6 pm). The Bayou Run (6.6 miles) is the usual route but there are shortcuts and alternative routes as well. All levels are welcome. And the best part is the cheap beer at Valhalla, a delightfully casual and economical watering hole, afterwards. Come on out! It's a great way to break up the stressful work week.

Friday Hills at Mount Bacon (Tanglewood): Join us for this weekly run from St. Martins Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road to Mount Bacon. We meet in the church parking lot at the corner of Sage Road and Woodway Drive at 5:30 am. We have a 1.3 mile warm-up run to Mount Bacon and do 2 to 4 miles of hills with a 1.3 mile run back to the church.

Sunday Long Run (Memorial Park, 6:30AM): Join us for the weekly long run from Memorial Park zero-mile marker. We leave promptly at 6:30 and members typically run between 10 and 15 miles. Breakfast afterwards somewhere.
