BAYOU CITY CLASSIC 10K/5K - MAR. 2nd The Bayou City Classic 10K/5K is the 3rd race in the HARRRA Spring Series and the Road Runners Association of America (RRCA) Texas State 10K Championship for 2024.  A great day for a race and an even better day for a post-race party! PHIL SMITH 1935-2024

We are sad to announce that Phil Smith, one of the original members of BCRR, has passed away from cancer. He was 88 years old. Phil was only an occasional presence at BCRR events the last few years, but he maintained his active membership and was still a current member. He ran the Aramco Half Marathon in 2023 and was interviewed at the finish line as the oldest participant at age 87. He completed the Bayou City Classic last year in a respectable 1:49:45.   From his obituary: "Phil’s family has lived in the Memorial area for 55 years, and many neighbors have watched him run throughout the neighborhoods for many decades. He started running in 1979 and completed his first marathon in January 1981. As of 2023, he was the oldest runner of the Houston Aramco Half Marathon. For many years, he held the distinguished title of completing the most consecutive Houston Marathons. Overall, he has completed 27 marathons and 15 half marathons. He continued running throughout his lifetime and well into his 88th year."   Heartfelt condolences to Phil's family and all who knew him. Phil's Obituary  ­

Poppy's Run For Life 5K - March 17th  When: March 17, 2024, 8AM   Where: Hennessy Park, 1900 Lyons Avenue, Houston, TX 77020   Why: Support Poppy's Run for Life, organized by BCRR member Caryn Honig in memory of her father and grandfather, who both died by suicide.   We are forming a BCRR team in memory of BCRR member Jim Knievel, who passed away in October. BCRR is a member club of the Houston Area Road Runners Association (HARRA) and participates in its competitions based on our members' performance in the HARRA Race Series.  Top runners in the individual categories receive cash awards. Rankings can be viewed on the HARRA Leaderboard.
