"Run for a Reason" BCRR Fundraisers

The following BCRR members are participating in the Run For A Reason program and could use your help in reaching their fundraising goals for this year:

Eric Faria is running for the CanCare, Inc. team.
CanCare provides free one-on-one emotional support to cancer patients and their family members across Houston, the United States, and world. CanCare matches cancer patients or caregivers with highly trained volunteers who know first-hand the physical, emotional, and spiritual turmoil that someone newly diagnosed and their family are experiencing.    Fundraise/Donate

Steve Hasson is running for the Houston Food Bank team.
The Houston Food Bank is the largest source of food for hunger relief charities in 18 southeast Texas counties. A network of nearly 500 food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and other agencies, feeding a total of 137,000 people each week, provides more than 65 million pounds of food and prepared meals annually.  Fundraise/Donate

Rebecca Kramer is running for the Lupus Foundation of America team.
Lupus Foundation of America, Texas Gulf Coast Chapter
The LFA supports individuals and families affected by lupus, improving the diagnosis and treatment of the disease through research, education, awareness, and support programs for health professionals and the public.  Fundraise/Donate

Bridget Kaminski is running for the Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services team.
Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services
Since its beginnings in 1903 as an orphanage, Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services has been providing residential care and other services to children and families with no place else to turn. Whether it's through one of our group homes, a foster home, adoption, our Child and Family Program, or the Advanced Education and Aftercare Program, we do all we can to help show the children in our care that they are beloved children of God.  Fundraise/Donate

BCRR This Week January 7 through 14, 2013

HELLO BAYOU CITY!

*******
Thanks to Bill Hayes for hosting last week beer tab at Valhalla.  Thanks Bill!

*******

BCRR Birthdays This Week:  Russell Henderson (January 9), Holden Muirhead (January 14) and Sydney Rosenfeld (January 14).

Have a very happy birthday!

*******

THE CHEVRON HOUSTON MARATHON AND HALF MARATHON is only six days away.   If you are planning to join us for the BCRR annual pasta loading dinner you must RSVP TODAY or you will not be able to attend.   RSVP to Susan Davis at  susandavisbcrr@gmail.com   A response email will be sent to confirm.   We are trying the HONOR system where you will pay at the front door. No shows will still be required to pay so that the club doesn't have to absorb the cost. You will need to bring cash or check. No credit cards please.

For those of you not familar with this restaurant The Spaghetti WESTERN it is located at 1608 Shepherd Drive near the Cadillac Bar on Shepherd near I-10.

This is not the Spaghetti WAREHOUSE.

The set menu includes three pasta dishes (one will be vegetarian), salad, bread, dessert and tea/soda. Cash bar will be available.

If you will be attending don't forget to bring your old running shoes to donate to SEARCH Homeless Services.     Last year over 1,000 pairs of shoes were collected by this organization and donated to homeless people in the Houston area.    This year they are asking your help to break that record.

*******

Chuck and Cheryl will once again host the post race party at their house located at 5314 Mandell. Everyone is invited whether or not you run the race. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for guests.  The menu is red beans and rice with beer, wine, and margaritas. Showers are available. Bring your swimsuit and towel for the hot tub.

*******

Another perk of BCRR membership during marathon week!

Think you'll need a change of socks or some back up Gu for the Houston Marathon?  Want to ditch excess clothes because it's a lot warmer than you expected, or pick up a dry shirt because it's colder or wetter than you expected?Chafing? Need an Advil, a beer, a gummi bear, or your own custom special strength potion?  BCRR has two aid stations along the marathon route, at mile 14 (on the other side of the Westpark overpass) and at mile 21 (at Memorial Park).

Here's how it works:  Bring anything you think you might need to get you through the marathon to the GRB on race morning. Your best bet is to package your stuff in a plastic bag labelled with your name for easy identification.  Also label at which stop you want your bag to be available (Mile 14 or Mile 21).  We will deliver them to the assigned aid station for you.

Look for the BCRR banner!  Advil, Vaseline, Bandaids, duct tape and a few other goodies will be available at the aid stations.  Stop by or wave as you run through.  Clothing and unused supplies will be brought to Chuck and Cheryl's post-race party for pick up.

If you are not running the marathon or half marathon, please volunteer for one of these two BCRR stops.

Please email Rosie rschmandt@yahoo.com,  or Susan Cita  susancita.bcrr@gmail.com today to volunteer.

Good luck runners!!

*******

As part of the Chevron Houston Marathon’s Run for a Reason program we have several generous BCRR members who are raising money for charities. (NOTE: for an updated list see: http://tinyurl.com/amxruvr )

If anyone would like to sponsor Steve they can click on this link: http://www.chevronhoustonmarathon.com/Donate/PersonalPage.cfm?MID=9815&CRID=35.

- Rebecca Kramer is running on the Lupus Foundation of America Team (LFA).

Tis the season to show your support and Chevron is making it easier than ever to donate $50,000 to the Run for a Reason Charity with the most votes. It's the fastest, easiest way to help the LFA win the prize! rules and link to vote are below.

  • One vote per person
  • Email address does not need to be given, and will not be captured
  • Most votes wins
  • Votes verified by independent agency
  • Chevron, the Houston Marathon Committee and the Houston Marathon Foundation are not responsible for votes not received due to computer/internet malfunctions

Volunteers needed for the Mile 2 water station at the Houston Marathon - Please help!

From HARRA President and BCRR Member Joe Carey:

"Can you see if you can find me some warm bodies out of BCRR, ALRC and Tornados to lend a hand at Mile 2 water station a week from Sunday?

The planned captain bailed with his volunteers.    I am going to fill in as station captain and need to get some more volunteers or else I don't see how there can be a station.

It really is an easy duty since the volunteer does not need to be there until 6 am and is done at 8 am.   Perfect for someone dropping off a runner at CHM at 5:30 am, working the station and moving on later in the course to watch.

Or perfect for someone not running this year who can give back.

If we could get 4 to 6 folks from each club, I would be forever in your debt.    Let me know if this is possible, I know a lot of people have plans already so I am not sure."

BCRR Members Qualified for "Local Elite" Status for Houston Marathon

Five Bayou City Members have achieved "Local Elite"status for the 2013 Houston Marathon. Elite status is awarded to the first local finisher per category meeting the minimum qualifying standards in each of the 2012 HARRA Fall Series races and the 2012 Chevron Houston Marathon. These runners are "invited" to run the Houston Marathon or the Aramco Half-Marathon as VIPs and are treated to all the accouterments befitting, including gratis registration, swag, special pre-race VIP suites (so they don't have to rub elbows with the sweaty/shivering masses), etc, etc... (groupies?? ;-)

Congratulations to the following qualifiers (qualifying races indicated): Rob Walters (2012 Houston Marathon), Jody Berry (USA 10 Miler), Pablo Rivera (Houston Half Marathon), Scott Bounds (25K), and Suzy Seeley (30K)!

You make us all proud!
